Not since Italian Neorealism of the 1950s has anyone so brilliantly portrayed the personal and collective dramas of working lives as David Riker in The City/La ciudad (1998), his masterful
exploration of Latino workers in the barrios of New York. Riker's gaze fuses understanding, tenderness and social isolation in a film now considered amongst the classics of North American independent cinema. Fourteen years after The City/La ciudad, Riker again exhibited his great interest and feeling for Latino characters and issues with a story that straddles the US/Mexico border (The Girl, 2012). This tribute put on by èצӰÏñ acknowledges the great talent of this original and unique filmmaker. We are proud to have the the opportunity to show both films in the presence of their author, in particular The City/La Ciudad, which will be shown in its new, restored digital version.
