Recordar el pasado inventar el futuro: The Personal Documentary
At the beginning of the 1980s, after years of revolutionary insurrections and military repression, Latin American countries—particularly in the Southern Cone—began a process of democratization which permeated various aspects of Latin American Culture, in particular documentary filmmaking. As the cultural emphasis shifted from the “collective” of the 1960s and 1970s to the “individual” of the 1980s, South American filmmakers started to break away from the principles of the documentary genre by rejecting the supposed “objectivity” of cinematic discourse and producing what is now called “personal" documentaries.
“Recordar el pasado, inventar el futuro – The Personal Documentary” will showcase the films and filmmakers that best represent this new genre and provide a basis for discussing the implications and relevance of this artistic expression.
