PATH+ "Commentarial Reading and al-Hariri's Impostures" with Matthew Keegan
Speaker(s): Matthew L. Keegan (Columbia University)
Commentarial Reading and al-Hariri's Impostures
This talk will examine the multi-layered commentarial tradition that was an integral part of both Islamic education and the narrative structure of al-Hariri's Impostures. By examining the life of a young reader of the Impostures, Keegan aims to shed light on the affective states that mediated commentary culture.
Matthew L. Keegan is the Moinian Assistant Professor in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Cultures at Barnard College of Columbia University. His research focuses on Islamic intellectual history and adab, and his book project, from which this talk is derived, explores the commentaries on al-Hariri's Maqamat or Impostures, a 12th-century collection of stories about an eloquent trickster.
