Lecture by Ofelia Ferrán: 'The ‘Gift’ of Memory Writing and Death in the Work of Jorge Semprún'
Date
Thu May 21st 2009, 1:00pm
Sponsored by the Humanities Center and the Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures.
Semprún's most celebrated work, "La vida o la escritura", is an autobiographical work that narrates Semprún's captivity in the Buchenwald concentration camp from 1943 to 1945.
His work would find resonance with scholars studying issues such as trauma studies, memory, autobiography, Marxism (Semprún was an active member of the Spanish communist party) and psychoanalytic and post-structuralist theories of anxiety and death.
