As a concept, Hispanism has always promoted the idea that Spaniards and Spanish Americans are members of the same transatlantic family, community, or raza. This belief in a supranational community, largely based on a shared language, was for decades at the core of many discourses on both Spanish and Latin American identities. This talk will examine some issues around the "ideologies of Hispanism" in light of the Spanish Republican Exile to Mexico in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War.
