How is the Holocaust made present during the military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-83)? This paper takes a new angle on the “uniqueness debate” by examining comparisons between dictatorship Argentina and the Holocaust. In particular it discusses how Jews living in Argentina during that time used the Holocaust to frame vexing issues of complicity and victimization. The paper also addresses the interpretive and ethical problems that arise in the face of the highly instrumental nature of these references. Can such rhetoric nevertheless return us to what Pierre Vidal Naquet calls the “historical density” of the Holocaust and its legacy?
