The rise of the far right in Germany has prompted renewed interest in Critical Theory’s analyses of National Socialism and related movements. Yet this Adorno reception may be insufficient to grasp the distinctiveness of contemporary extremism, in the context of reactionary Islamism and left-wing antisemitism in the name of “antifascism.” A reading of Finn Job’s 2022 novel ᾱԳٱ–that moves between the immigrant ghetto in Neukölln and Marcel Proust’s France– provides useful insight.
