"A Working Alias: African Sailors and Fungible Identities across France and Great Britain’s Maritime Empires (1920-1939)"
Please join us for a workshop with , Associate Professor of History at UCLA, and author of . Under discussion will be a draft book chapter titled, "A Working Alias: African Sailors and Fungible Identities across France and Great Britain’s Maritime Empires (1920-1939)." Part of a broader book project exploring the maritime world of colonial African seafarers in the first half of the 20th century, the chapter examines how African sailors engaged with and circumvented the economic and political regimes that employed and policed them. It focuses, in particular, on how sailors adopted aliases and traded in identity and work papers in order to work on ships flying diverse flags.
