Under discussion will be a draft chapter titled, "Jean Montague: Fugitive Accounts." Dr. Joseph-Gabriel's chapter examines the narrative of Jean Montague, an enslaved boy in Paris, in order to explore ideas about freedom and fugitivity in France in the 18th century. The correspondence by and about Montague illuminates the ways that enslaved people contested power and personhood in France as both the site of their enslavement and a land of freedom.
