Sur les Traces de Marguerite Yourcenar:
Marguerite Yourcenar was the first woman admitted to the Académie française, a literary legend of the 20th century, and the embodiment of the scholarship of another time. Through this docudrama, Mallet probes the memory of this woman, the power of her writings, her environmental actions, and the relativity of happiness. Like a travel film, the movie takes viewers along the paths travelled by Yourcenar, so they can see the landscapes she saw and discover the places that left their mark on her. By evoking the past to recreate her world – in Europe, North America, Egypt and India – this film conveys her impressions, enhanced by the accounts of those who knew her and portrays a cinematic impression of rare beauty. Mallet highlights the vitality, the wisdom, and the will of a writer outside of time.
Since coming to Quebec in 1973, Chilean born filmmaker Marilú Mallet has been a prolific filmmaker. In her native land, Mallet was an aspiring architect until she began studying film during the Popular Unity period. When the socialist government was overthrown in a military coup, Mallet left Chile. In Montreal she began directing documentaries and doing work in television. Most of her work centers upon the experiences of immigrants to Canada. Using a technique whereby she blends fiction and reality by having her subjects improvise and act out their situations, Mallet is able to create films that evoke the beauty of simple daily actions. In addition to filmmaking, Mallet has also published collections of short stories in French.
