The third feature from award-winning writer and director Anna Muylaert.  Val, the eponymous "second mother" is a hardworking live-in housekeeper in modern day São Paulo. She takes care of every one of her wealthy employer's needs, from cooking and cleaning to being a surrogate mother to their teenage son. But when Val's estranged daughter shows up and refuses to accept this upstairs/downstairs dynamic, the intrinsic and longstanding class barriers within the home are sent into disarray.
