La Grande Illusion (1937) by Jean Renoir is an utterly surprising film, given the setting of a German prisoner-of-war camp during the first World War. Renoir focuses on the unique tensions and sense of community that only a prisoner of war camp could foster, and yet he extends his investigation of humanity, its ideals, and its demons to both sides of the conflict. Follow French officers’ fantastic escape plans and extravagant pastimes in this film, quoted as being one of the best films ever made.
