A foundational film in Brazil’s cinema novo movement, Black God, White Devil is the story of Manuel (Gerardo del Rey) and his wife Rosa (Yoná Magalhães), who become outlaws after Manuel kills his boss. They join up with Antônio das Mortes (Maurício do Valle), a messianic figure, and roam the Brazilian backlands in search of meaning and of destiny. In a blend of mysticism, religion and popular culture, Rocha created this austere film and it became one of Brazil’s most influential films, a symbolic drama of self-discovery portraying a solitary group exploring geographic and spiritual frontiers.
