This talk presents the first new English translation of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital in fifty years, based on the final German edition revised by Marx himself. Professors Paul North and Paul Reitter have produced a critical edition that preserves the precision, vitality, and wit of Marx’s original prose while incorporating extensive commentary and annotations informed by the latest scholarship. Marx’s critique of capitalism explores the relentless pursuit of “value” as the foundation of the global economic system, exposing its impact on labor, life, and social division. This translation offers modern readers a renewed understanding of Das Kapital's analysis of exploitation, colonization, and class struggle, connecting its insights to pressing contemporary issues.

Presenters: Paul Reitter (Professor of German, Ohio State University) and Paul North (Maurice Natanson Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures, Yale University)
