  • Monday, Oct. 28th at 5:30pm in Pigott Hall, Room TBA: Screening of Une famille, followed by a Q/A with film director Christine Angot.

Christine Angot is a French novelist, journalist, and playwright. Since publishing ’IԳٱ (Incest) in 1999, Angot has joined the ranks of France's most significant female writers (along with Virginie Despentes and Annie Ernaux). She is a trailblazer in both form and content, known for her literary exploration and critique of “autofiction” as a new genre; for her sharp, brutal confrontation of sexual violence and the web of silence and social enabling that makes incest not only possible, but common; and for her incisive defense of literature as a field of knowledge. As an intellectual figure and “auteur maudit,” she has been instrumental in changing the literary field and societal views at large.

Synopsis of Une familleAngot’s latest documentary, a film not yet released in the U.S.—was a sensation in France when it came out last March. Une famille is a mind-blowing documentary about a woman who, having experienced the brutality of incest, is determined to understand how her family has dealt with the situation. Award-winning French writer Christine Angot finds herself on a business trip to Strasbourg, the city where her late father lived for many years. It’s also the city where, at age 13, she met him for the first time, and he began to rape her. His wife and children still live there. Angot takes a camera and knocks on her family’s doors, urging her kin to clarify their attitudes towards her father’s crime that lasted for so many years. Angot's cinematographic journey challenges social norms and family perspectives in dealing with incest.

Running time: 82 minutes. In French with English subtitles.
