2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first èצӰ screening of the legendary film The Battle of Algiers that came to define the actual battle of Algiers that took place in 1957 in Algiers, then under French rule.
Join us to discuss the “Battle of Algiers” then and now, as 2019 Algiers and Algeria are undergoing political turmoil of unprecedented magnitude since the 1990s.

About the speakers:
Michael G. Vann is a professor of world history at California State University, Sacramento. Author of numerous articles, including “The Colonial Casbah on the Silver Screen: Using Pépé le Moko and The Battle of Algiers to Teach Colonialism, Race, and Globalization in French History,” published in Radical History Review in 2017, he is the acclaimed author of The Great Hanoi Rat Hunt: Empire Disease, and Modernity in French Colonial Vietnam (Oxford, 2019). He is currently writing a comparative history of representations of Cold War mass violence in Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Cambodian museums.
Djalil Reghis graduated as a Sloan Fellow from the èצӰ Graduate School of Business in 2018. He is currently earning a Master of Arts in Public Policy at èצӰ. Before joining èצӰ, Djalil worked for five years for an investment holding company to deploy investments in manufacturing and real estate in Algeria. Djalil Reghis was born and raised in Algiers.
Marie-Pierre Ulloa is a lecturer in the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages at èצӰ. Her teaching and research focus on France and North Africa. She is the author of two books, Francis Jeanson, a Dissident Intellectual from the French Resistance to the Algerian War (èצӰ UP, 2008) and Le Nouveau rêve américain. Du Maghreb à la Californie (The New American Dream: From North Africa to California, CNRS éditions, 2019).
